Add Jump Links or Anchor Links to your WordPress Website Post/Page
Below are the following “step by step” instructions for adding Jump Links or Anchor Links to your Page or Post in the WordPress Dashboard.
People use jump links (or anchor links) as a lighter “table of contents” to let readers click a link and go straight to a specific section on the same web page without scrolling. These links help users navigate long blocks of text efficiently and quickly.
To add these links:
- For a visual experience, please click below for the video on my YouTube channel,

Need a hand with your WordPress website?
If you’d rather spend your time running your business than managing your website, I can help.
I provide WordPress website maintenance and support and those small website jobs that keep getting pushed down your to-do list.

To get started for the example today, I’m going to use a Blog Post, but please note this is the exact same instructions for a “Page”.
Setting the Jump Link
- Go into “Posts” and “All posts” and open the Blog Post you want to edit.
- This is where you could use “List” block to add some Headings. These could potentially relate to the section of your post you want to quickly send readers too. But really, This function can be used for any words in your Blog Post.
- As an example, I’ll use the word “key takeaways” and what you need to do is actually highlight the entire word (or words) you want to be linked.
- Once highlighted, block settings will pop up at the top and you just need to click on the (-) link button or Control “K”.
- You’ll start off by typing a hashtag (#) and then a related keyword. Now, the keyword can be anything you want, but I suggest to keep it simple and there can’t be any spaces, if using multiple words. This means for my example, I’m typing “#keytakeaways”
- As a handy hint and to ensure you use the same word in the next step, please highlight the keyword (without the hashtag) and copy it (Control C).
- Then press the “Submit” button to accept the link and you can see that it’s highlighted and underlined.
Assigning the Link to a Blog Section
We now need to assign this link to a section in the Blog Post, or further down the page. For this example, I will using an actual heading block but you can really anything like paragraphs, columns, words or headings.
- Scroll down into the section of the Blog Post where you want to Jump link to sent you reader to.
- Click inside the Block, for me, this is just the heading Block.
- On the right hand side look at the block settings and scroll down to the “advanced” section and open it up by clicking the down arrow.
- The “HTML anchor” is where you need to type or paste (Control V ) the Keyword you used before in the first step. For my example “keytakeaways” (without the Hashtag)
- Then click “Save” in the top right corner to save the entire post.
Wrap Up
Feel free to confirm your changes by viewing the Blog Post on your Live Site. Click the Links and ensure it sends your readers down quickly to the section you wanted it to.
…And that’s it!
