Create/Edit a Pattern or Reusable Block in the Kadence WordPress Theme

Below are the following “step by step” instructions to create or maintain a Pattern, or what use to be known as a “Reusable Block”, in the Kadence WordPress theme.

People use reusable blocks (synced patterns) in Kadence Blocks to save time editing posts or pages, maintain design consistency throughout your site, and the ease of updating content globally across an entire website.

To get started:

For today’s example I’m going to use Blog Posts, but Reusable Blocks or Patterns can be used through your entire site, which means both pages or posts. However, the way to set, edit and reuse these Pattern is exactly the same on either.

Set a Pattern or Reusable Block

Starting in your WordPress Dashboard please hover on “Posts”, click on “All Posts” and then, click to edit any blog post you wish.

You can set any type of block as a Pattern. This includes examples like paragraphs, buttons, row layouts or even grouped sections as a template. Once you have the area designed that you want to reuse,

  • please click the block, or the group block for the settings on that entire block.
  • Use the “Three Dot Ellipse” to view the extra settings.
  • Press the “Create Pattern” option.
  • Type in the Name of the Pattern (e.g. “Call to Action”), this will be used later in other posts to find it.
  • Then press “Add”.
  • The Pattern or Reusable block is now saved.

Bring it into another Post or Page

Now, I’ll open up another Blog post:

  • Scroll down into the area I want to add the reusable block into.
  • You can press “Enter” on your keyboard to start a new paragraph.
  • Option 1 – hit the forward Slash ” / ” key and start typing whatever you saved the pattern as (e.g.. Call to action). Click for the Pattern and it will be brought into the new post.
  • Option 2 – Another option would be to click the ” + ” button on the right hand side and start typing the same words. Click for the Pattern and it will be brought into the new post.
  • Press “Save” in the top right hand corner to save changes.

Edit a Pattern

Now, to edit the Pattern, you can click on block you’re reusing and press “Edit original“.

  • But, I prefer to hit the “Three Dot Ellipse” for more settings and right click “Manage Patterns” to bring it up on another page.
  • Here you’ll find all the saved Patterns attached to this website.
  • Click the one you want to edit and make the changes as you would on a normal blog post.
  • Then press” Save”.
  • This will change ANY or ALL blogs or pages with this pattern attached, which could be one post or more than 100.

Reusing to Edit for each Blog

There are circumstances where a Pattern is used as a Design block, template and to keep consistency throughout your website.

In this case,

  • once the block is set, you can bring it into a post using the directions above.
  • Then Hit the “Three Dot Ellipse” and press the “Detach” option.

This will remove it from the Synced Pattern and you can edit the post however you like. This will change only the post your on and not any others.

Wrap Up

Reusable Blocks or Patterns can be very handy to time time editing each blog or page, so I hope this has helped you maintain your website.
